Personality & Traits

Personality Overview Jorik, having grown up amongst humans, is much more knowledgeable about how emotions can effect a situation, and often can use this to his advantage when dealing with any situation that could arise. Having never fully attained Kolinahr, his own emotions may come out in situations of extreme stress, but he tends to attempt to mitigate the damage or avoid these situations if possible.

Having never attained full status of Kolinahr doesn't stop him from practicing everything Surak taught, and his adoptive parents actually pushed him to embrace Vulcan culture as much as he could. Upon entry to Starfleet Academy, his unique situation actually earned him praise for uniquely being able to diffuse potentially dangerous training scenarios without violence even needing to be threatened.

Personal History Jorik was born to Vulcan parents living on Earth, as Strom and T'Pes both worked on Earth Spacedock as Starfleet Engineers. Shortly after his birth, his parents were going to visit a couple of close friends and colleagues in San Francisco when something on their shuttle malfunctioned. The resulting loss of control caused the shuttlecraft to crash into the grounds of Starfleet Academy--thankfully avoiding any personnel on the ground (two trees were damaged and a third uprooted by the crash).

Strom and the pilot of the shuttle were both killed on impact, T'Pes was gravely wounded protecting the infant Jorik (who came out of the incident without injury.) While T'Pes was in the hospital, their friends, Micha and Diane Thoran, took in the baby to care for him.

Unfortunately, T'Pes would succumb to her injuries just a couple days later, leaving Jorik an orphan and his future up in the air. The Vulcan High Council wanted to place the child with an adoptive family on Vulcan to raise him, while the Thorans wanted to keep him.

To this end, for nearly two years, Diane lived and worked on Vulcan, fighting with the Council almost daily to be allowed to keep Jorik and raise him on Earth. Micha, having been a Starship Captain in his own right for a few years before the accident, also called in a few favors, helping to use character witnesses and testimony to eventually sway the Council to allow the child to remain with the Thorans.

As he grew up, while Jorik was not immersed in Vulcan culture, he was also not kept away from it, as well. His parents received many gifts from Vulcan friends and even some near strangers, all of which would allow the budding Vulcan to explore his culture while still experiencing that of Humans as well.

Even in his late childhood years, Jorik was a mediator, his desire to follow Surak's logical teachings and suppress emotion yet still understand how it can effect a situation lent him well to this role, and many times his friends would come to him if there was a disagreement.

By the time he was ready to enroll in the Academy, Jorik had already taught himself several useful mediation techniques mostly by physical practice and by reading about them.
Service Record Starfleet Academy
During his first couple of years at the Academy, he did as was expected, earning high marks in almost every general education class and several additional certifications not yet expected of him. These included advanced First Aid, the first Shipboard Weapons Systems certifications (not expected to be completed until the third year), and two hand-to-hand certifications.

Third year
By the time of his third year at the Academy, Jorik had declared for a path in Security, deciding to put the skills he'd taught himself growing up to good use. This impressed many of his instructors as while many of his classmates--even other Vulcans--would attempt to diffuse a situation, it would often end in a violent resolution or fighting. Only one situation (designed to be impossible to prevent a fight breaking out) of those used as training scenarios in the holodeck was unable to be diffused, and Jorik managed to subdue both subjects.

Cadet Cruise
While mostly uneventful, several intentional training scenarios during Jorik's Cadet Cruise put him and his fellow cadets into intense situations, including a potential standoff with Cardassians, a severe medical emergency, and a potential saboteur aboard the vessel. All situations were dealt with to satisfactory standards (although the medical emergency was nearly failed due to multiple doctors arguing over treatments).

USS Montgomery
The next four years (and Jorik's first assignment) was as a junior Security officer aboard the ill-fated USS Montgomery. The ship would be involved in several skirmishes with pirates and terrorist cells. The pirates would eventually critically damage the ship, after nearly four years of off-and-on fighting, and a timely passing by a Federation hospital ship would result in their rescue.

For his role in the incidents onboard the Montgomery, Jorik would be promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade

Starfleet Academy and the USS La Forge
After the rather harrowing assignment to the Montgomery, and a short leave period to recuperate, Jorik requested a much more peaceful assignment as an instructor at Starfleet Academy, which was quickly granted.

This would take him another two years of relative peace and he helped remind up and coming Security officers that violence did not have to be the first option and that trying to diffuse a situation could result in better outcomes in the end.

His teaching stint was short lived, however, and he was soon transferred to the USS La Forge, taking his first Chief of Security position. The La Forge did not, initially, have a dedicated Tactical officer, nor could they manage to keep most of the department intact for the then-short career of the ship.

By the time he'd request transfer two years later, the La Forge's entire security and tactical department had been rebuilt, and the ship was again prospering.

Leave and reassignment
In light of a lot of the stress that occurred from the La Forge, along with a transfer, Jorik requested a few months off to de-stress and visit family, both on Earth and on Vulcan.

This request was granted, and Jorik would spend most of his leave on Vulcan, visiting with distant family he'd only passingly met growing up. While he heard of the Frontier Day incident, he was not there to actually experience it.

Upon his return to active duty, he was given new orders to report to the USS Saratoga, the very ship at the center of the incident.
