| Personal History | Born in 2373 to a Cardassian father and a Welsh-born human mother, Siân grew up displaced far from home. Her father escaped from Cardassia during the height of the Dominion War as a refugee on a Cardassian shuttle, Tarak-class, the Ravok. Jem Hadar fighters attacked his shuttle, almost destroying it if it wasn't for Riven’s adept engineering skill in holding it together. Sending out a distress signal, a Steamrunner-class Starfleet ship, the USS Axel, dropped out of warp and fired on the two Jem Hadar vessels harassing the Ravok. Dispersing the Jem Hadar ship, the shuttle held out long enough for the USS Axel to beam the survivors and escape into warp. One of the medical technicians, Gwyneth Morgan, tended to an injured Cardassian. Riven and Gwyneth met for the first time, and her charms softened Riven’s otherwise hardened exterior. Fostering a friendship between them, they returned to Federation space, got to know each other, and eventually married after dating for six months. Siân Morgan Kirel was born in space onboard a Federation ship. She grew up exposed to both her father’s Cardassian engineering world and her mother’s human medical one, absorbing structure, precision, and compassion in equal measure. Siân was ten when her father died protecting them. The loss forced her mother to return to her hometown in Wales, where Siân spent the rest of her childhood. As a visibly Cardassian hybrid in a post‑war Federation community, she faced quiet but persistent prejudice that shaped her guarded, disciplined nature. At sixteen, she entered Starfleet Academy to pursue both operations and engineering. Despite occasional teasing and the lingering biases of her peers, she built a reputation as a capable, steady student with a strong technical mind. She graduated with solid marks and was assigned to her first posting aboard the USS Orson Welles, a Nebula‑class starship, as an engineering officer. During the Borg skirmishes of 2401, the Orson Welles suffered catastrophic damage. The crippled ship limped back to Federation space, and Siân was reassigned to the USS Saratoga, where her experience with unstable systems and crisis‑driven engineering earned her the position of Chief Engineer. |
