U.S.S. Saratoga

USS Saratoga was a sloop in the United States Continental Navy and the first ship named in honor of the historic Battle of Saratoga. Built in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by Wharton and Humphries, construction began in December 1779 and the vessel was launched on 10 April 1780.

Launched under the command of Captain John Young, the Saratoga began its career as a diplomatic escort and would later be assigned to patrol the American eastern seaboard. The ship would be involved in several skirmishes and assisted in the capture of other vessels. Later, the ship would be sent on assignment to the Caribbean. It would be during this assignment that the Saratoga would meet her demise. While on escort duty within the region the Saratoga encountered and captured two vessels operating within the region. Shortly afterward personnel sailing near the Saratoga identified the vessel as having 'vanished' during a storm and was declared lost.

U.S.S. Saratoga

USS Saratoga, named for the Battle of Saratoga, was a corvette built in Vergennes, Vermont for service during the War of 1812. The Saratoga began her service on Lake Champlain as England was focusing attention on North America, using a series of raids along the American coast to support a ground invasion from Canada. The presence of Saratoga delayed these plans, leading the British military to postpone their plans. This delay allowed the Saratoga to lead a blockade of the Richelieu River.

The Saratoga would be an instrumental component of the Battle of Plattsburgh wherein Commandant Thomas Macdonough, commander of American naval forces on Lake Champlain, used the Saratoga to lead an assault upon the British forces located there. After a fierce confrontation, the Saratoga and its fleet were victorious against the British vessels and retreated to Canada. This weakened the British position, helped to restore American morale, and led to a lasting peace.

After the war, Saratoga was decommissioned and later sold.

One of the first aircraft carriers built by the United States Navy, the Saratoga and her sister ship Lexington were instrumental in developing and refining carrier tactics prior to the outbreak of World War II.

A central figure in the American Pacific Fleet, the Saratoga participated in multiple engagements. The ship was was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine during efforts to relieve Wake Island and, after lengthy repairs, the ship supported forces participating in the Guadalcanal Campaign and the Battle of the Eastern Solomons before being again torpedoed and sent for repairs. Returning to the Solomon Islands after repairs, the Saratoga would also provide air support during the Gilbert and Marshall Islands Campaign before being was transferred to the Indian Ocean to support the British Eastern Fleet.

Saratoga participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima but was badly damaged by kamikaze hits several days into the fighting and forced to return to the United States for repairs. The Saratoga would be modified as a training vessel for the remainder of the war and would later be used to transport troops back to the United States after the Japanese surrender. Her career would end during Operation Crossroads when the Saratoga was used for testing of the impact of atomic weapons against an aircraft carrier. Assigned to scientific and survey operations in the Vulcan Sector, Saratoga would participate in multiple long duration exploratory assignments before the outbreak of the Earth-Romulan War. During the conflict, Saratoga was assigned to the Atlantis Battle Group and damaged during the following attack on Tau Ceti IV by the Romulans. Heavily damaged, Saratoga returned to Earth where it underwent extensive repairs before returning to combat. The Saratoga was an instrumental combatant during the Battle of Sol in which the vessel defended its sister ship, the Intrepid, from Romulan attack and was able to defend the nascent Utopia Planitia shipyard.

Present at the Battle of Cheron as part of the Enterprise Battle Group, Saratoga was absorbed into the United Federation of Planets' Starfleet following the creation of the new, allied government. The Saratoga would return to exploratory assignments until 2190 when the vessel was decommissioned in favor of newer designs. Placed into storage, the Saratoga would be used to test the tactical capabilities of the new Walker Class in 2195 and was destroyed.

The Saratoga proved itself as a capable survey vessel, studying 47 separate star systems during its missions of discovery.

With the outbreak of the Federation-Klingon War of 2256 the Saratoga was reassigned to serve as a patrol vessel along the Federation/Klingon Border. During its assignment, the vessel was attacked by a trio of Klingon Birds of Prey and moderately damaged in the conflict requiring the vessel to travel of Starbase 22 for repair. Upon arrival, a Klingon Raider followed the Saratoga into the Starbase's Docking Garage, where it self-destructed and destroyed the Saratoga while crippling the outpost.

Commissioned in 2275 under the command of Captain Margaret Alexander, the Saratoga was assigned to Scientific and Survey Operations along the Klingon Neutral Zone. During its tenure, the Saratoga would commonly be used to transport Federation dignitaries and Starfleet officials to various meetings and conferences.

In 2286, while on patrol of the Klingon Neutral Zone, the Saratoga encountered a probe of unknown origin on course for Earth and was neutralized. Saratoga and her crew are rescued following the probe's departure; however, due to the length of time that the ship has been immobilized, Captain Alexander had been forced to place herself and her crew in suspended animation to survive. Due to her ingenuity, Captain Alexander and the crew of the Saratoga received a commendation for their service. The Saratoga would later be transferred to the Diplomatic Corps, where it was instrumental in helping to nurture the First Khitomer Accord.

The Saratoga was destroyed during the Tomed Incident of 2311 and its remains were towed to the Qualor II Surplus Depot for scrap. Despite this, the Saratoga would remain undisturbed until the year 2368 when the Saratoga's remains were discovered to have been illegally salvaged by the Ferengi. Due to the loss of the USS Saratoga NCC-31911 at the Battle of Wolf 359, Starfleet Command directed that the Saratoga be restored to serve as a museum ship at the Fleet Museum at Athan Prime in honor of its lost descendant, including having its appearance altered to replicate the later vessel.

USS Saratoga was the second Miranda Class and third Starfleet vessel to be named in honor of the American Revolutionary War Battle of Saratoga. Constructed at Copernicus Shipyards on Luna, the Saratoga has become one of the most well known vessels in the history of Starfleet.

Launched in 2325 during the Federation's glory days of exploration, the Saratoga was assigned to scientific and survey operations in the Alpha Quadrant. During its assignments, the Saratoga would become a familiar sight within the region and would frequently scout planetary systems along the outer rim territories of the Federation. During one such survey, the Saratoga would be instrumental in the response to the Betreka Nebula Incident in 2328, where the vessel offered support to the stricken Klingon vessel IKS Wo'bortas and the Cardassian vessel Sontok. Despite their efforts, the Saratoga's assistance offered little in the means of stabilizing relations between either party with the Federation.

After having served in both the Cardassian and Tzenkethi Conflicts, the Saratoga was assigned to supply missions within the Core Sectors of the Federation. It was this assignment that would lead the Saratoga to be assigned to assist with defending the Federation from Borg invasion in early 2367. The Saratoga and 39 other starships assembled at Wolf 359 to intercept and detour the Borg Cube from travelling to Earth. Mere moments into the battle, the Cube focused its attack upon the Saratoga and captured the vessel into its tractor beam. Using its exotic weaponry, the Borg quickly overwhelmed the Saratoga and caused heavy damage to the craft, leading to antimatter containment failure. The ship would be destroyed soon after with mass casualties among its crew and passengers.

Launched from the 40 Eridani A Starfleet Construction Yard at Vulcan in 2372, by extension of its relationship to the predecessor Saratoga this vessel is the fourth Starfleet ship to be named in honor of the Battle of Saratoga on Earth.

Shortly after its launch, Saratoga was assigned to patrol of the Cardassian Demilitarized Zone in support of the defense of the region from Klingon invasion due to the suspension of the Khitomer Accords. Not long after its assignment, however, the Cardassian Union announced its decision to join the Dominion and the Saratoga was ordered to prepare for the potential outbreak of war. Due to its nature, Saratoga was made a military command vessel and was assigned to the Fifth Fleet.

Saratoga would make its name during the Dominion War, participating in several pivotal battles of the Dominion War including Operation Return and the First Battle of Chin'toka. Saratoga would, however, be lost during the Second Battle of Chin'toka after engagement with the Breen. Of her crew only 47 people survived.

U.S.S. Saratoga NCC-83007

In 2381, the Romulan Star Empire's home system was threatened by the Romulan star threatening to go supernova. This led the Romulan government to request the assistance of the United Federation of Planets in evacuating the area, resulting in the construction of ten thousand Wallenberg Class vessels to help in the evacuation. The USS Saratoga was one of the first Wallenberg Class starships launched and is the fifth Starfleet vessel to be named in honor of the American Revolutionary War Battle of Saratoga but, unlike its predecessor, she was not named in honor of the Miranda Class USS Saratoga NCC-31911.

Placed under the command of Tellarite Lieutenant Commander Kushnunn Thirnn, the Saratoga's mission was not without controversy as many within the Federation were angry that their government had had agreed to devote considerable resources to aid an enemy. Paired with a flotilla of 24 of its sister ships during the evacuation, Saratoga made several trips to the Maelstrom Sector to deliver refugees to colonies established in the Albreia, Itari, and Tevron systems. In early 2385, Saratoga took significant damage during a terrorist attack while transporting Reman refugees and had return to Utopia Planitia for repairs.

The Saratoga was drydocked at Utopia Planitia Shipyards during First Contact Day 2385 when multiple A500 androids, numerous synthetic ships, and the conscripted Mars Defense Perimeter began an attack. Saratoga was brought online and deployed to rescue personnel; however, a contingent of A500 androids were still aboard the Saratoga and killed the vessel's crew. Saratoga would then be used to attack the Mars Orbital Facility, colliding with and destroying the station.
