1,728 words; about a 9 minute read

Mission: Begin Again
Location: Medical Bay, DS12
Timeline: Current

The changing of the guard, passing of the torch, moving on to pastures new. All these were lovely metaphors that brought to mind the moving on to new things, the change that inevitably comes with time.

Conall's time on the Titan-A had come to an end with a promotion to Chief Security/Tactical Officer on one of the largest stations he'd ever known, DS12.

As with all new postings he was fully fit and able but still had to get the approval of a ships doctor as one step of two of coming on board. The other being meeting either the XO, or CO... or both.

Walking through the doors into a large medical bay he called out to see who would answer.

"I'll be with you in a moment." A woman's voice could be heard coming from the rear area of sick bay.

The voice was from a blonde haired woman, who was walking with an ensign out towards the front. "Next time if you fancy yourself to be a cowboy in the holodeck, until you are familiar with riding horses and rounding up stray cattle, just keep the safety features on a bit more higher? Believe you me, I can give you some stories that will raise the hair on the back of your neck. And a dislocated shoulder isn't fun at all."

"Well heard that you had done some herding cattle thought it would be easy, if you could do that." the ensign remarked, he giving a slight shrug.

Addison stopped in her tracks, closing her eyes and gave an exasperted sigh. She then opened her eyes up, placing her hand gently on the ensign's shoulder. "I also said it wasn't easy, and not to try it unless you had someone skiled. Do you remember that?"

"Well yeah, I just wanted to impress that girl I was with." the Ensign looking at the doctor. "She said she liked someone who liked the wild west."

Addison chuckled slightly. "Well you are going to be on light duty, and now get on outta here."

The ensign gave a nod and left sickbay.

"Okay, who's next?" giving a bit of a smile, her dark grey eyes looking about then her attention fastened on the man standing not too far. "Are you next? I'm Doctor Talbert."

Conall had propped himself by a biobed as he listened to the conversation between the young ensign and the female walking towards them. He leaned against it in a casual fashion but still observed the surroundings enough to note that the female doctor wore no pips on her collar denoting a civilian, and clearly someone who could handle large equine species.

"Lt. Commander Rovaris." he bowed slightly as the woman approached. "I can promise you that I have not tried to 'wrangle' any Earth cattle." he held up a PADD. "Just dropping in for a quick scan and I'll be out of your way in a few shakes of a floofa's tail feathers." he smiled.

"Did you remember to bring a real apple with you?" Addison remarked with a laugh. "There is a saying an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Or bring enough apples she'll make you a pie. Well that part is my own addition." giving a wink. "Don't worry I won't keep you here long. Since you are right here conveniently near a bio bed, just hop right on there, and lets get to scanning." giving a pat on the bio bed, as she went to get her medical scanner.

Conall raised an eyebrow at the mention of an apple but thankfully the good doctor quickly explained her meaning. Aside from the Academy Conall had spent little time with Humans as a large group. He watched as she walked away, his eyes drifting slightly until she turned back to face him, his eyes quickly looking in another direction. "I appreciate a quick turnaround when I'm in Sickbay. I can't say I can ever get used to the smell." he referred to the medical smell of the bay, but most didn't recognise it, or notice it. He figured those that spent their time in it often became 'nose-blind'. "You must be kept busy on a station this size?" He asked. "Or do you just care for the Starfleet personnel on board?"

"Oh, I take care of both civilian and Star Fleet Personnel. I used to be in Star Fleet but gave up my commission when I got married and was part of a colony. And my previous er base of operations had differing scents I used to utilize the scent of lavender or even rosemary to counteract the scent of well, cattle and other scents. Also, if things get too overly strong, I just put some vapor rub beneath my nose so as to not smell something to foul, especially when dealing with a dead body." Her words coming out nonchalantly.

Addison opened up her medical Tricorder, to begin her scan of Rovaris, her brow furrowed in concentration.

"Well your husband must be quite shocked you returned to a Starfleet facility after giving up your commission. Is he on board too?" Conall asked as he watched her scan him.

"No, he isn't on board. " Addison quietly said, "He passed away about four years ago. Had quite the heroic death mind you, saved a wee one from being trampled by stampeding cattle." glancing up from the medical scanner. "I came back to a Star Fleet facility as they seemed to need me, and also I felt that I owed them as well."

Conall nodded. "He must have been a fine man then. I am sorry he ascended too soon Doctor." he said with a soft, comforting smile. "It is often the good ones that are taken too soon... I often think my people are cursed for living so long that we must not be good at all." he half joked.

She chuckled, "Then I must be a very wicked woman to still be alive. I've had some close calls." giving a wink, "Nothing like being on a ship with one percent shielding left, minimal life support and no weapons in order to protect ourselves from pirates chasing us and just enough juice for an emergency hop in order to rendezvous with a Federation Ship which killed what little power we had."

Addison glanced back down at the readings on the scans, "You look pretty decent on your health, you may need an uptick on your vitamin b supplements and also toss in some capsicum, and some turmeric. Will keep you still running smoothly with your vitals." she looking back up. "Maybe some fresh meals, besides the replicated food. Just to create a balance."

"Why thank you doctor. I do try and keep myself fit and healthy." Conall spoke. "I do try to keep my turmeric intake quite high." he joked. "And I am more fond of a home cooked meal than a replicated one. It's just that in my field I find it difficult with long hours and constant busy work I never find the time to cook for myself."

Addison gave out a snort. "Well, we can find a place or someone who will prepare a meal for you, that's not replicated then you will have a balance. I tend to prep my home meals ahead of time then I can just heat it and eat it. Being a doctor can be busy as well."

"Oh I don't think there will be anyone cooking for me unless it's done at a restaurant." he nodded to himself. It had been a while since he'd had a woman in his life, well a permanent one anyway. "I bet you are kept busy with all those cowboys that come through your door." he referred to the man previously. He was a bit of a cowboy himself, but she didn't need to know that.

"Oh I do get busy but, I also depend on my staff as well. Can't deal with all of this all by my lonesome, ain't fun at all. I've normally got a team, well when I had my ship, and also the last ship I was on too. With this place, its huge but I'm liking it most definitely. As for someone prepping food for you, I can make some for you, when I make mine. I used to do that for my crew on my ship. It was a small ship so wasn't a bother." closing up her medical tricorder. "Well now, looks like you are fit as a fiddle and ready to dance." flashing a huge grin.

"Well doctor, I'd rather take you out for dinner before I have you prepping me some." Conall offered. It was a hit and hope but he didn't live life by playing it safe all the time. He got off the bio bed and smiled as she closed the tricorder. "Glad to hear it."

She didn't bat an eye, didn't hesitate. "Well now, I would love to go to dinner with you. Just tell me when and what time and I'll be ready quicker than a squirrel can shake its tail." giving a laugh. He was a fine looking man and it had been awhile since she had a date.

"Do these 'sq-squirrels'..." Conall tried to say the word but it sounded weird in his mouth. "shake their tails quickly?" he asked almost rhetorically before shaking his head. "Well I need to meet the XO, once I've done that I'll know what he wants me to start with here and I'll send you a message, or swing by and let you know?" he asked. He was quite happy she'd said yes. "I don't know where's good on the station so I'm afraid that would be in your ball park, to use a Human expression."

"Well here's where I live." Addison pulling out her PADD, and sending a message to his PADD, "And now you can do both. Unless you meant swinging on by here to let me know. Whichever would be good for you. I'm just a simple woman and try to go with the flow."

"I see nothing simple about you doctor." Conall smiled. "I'll pay you a visit later. Keep saving those cowboys Doc." he said as he waved his PADD over her head as he walked out the door.
