It's been half a day of travel since we had our rendezvous with the Starship Khitomer and the Stargazer still has over half a day to go until we reach the border between the United Federation of Planets and Romulan Free State territory. Not that I'm all that excited to get there. The Free State may be a fraction of the size of the ancestral Romulan Star Empire, but that makes them no less deadly.
Romulan territory in the Maelstrom consists of only three planetary systems awarded to them after the brief conflict between the Alpha Quadrant Powers and the Cardassians following the Dominion War. The sad part is that we helped them to colonize these systems during the Romulan Relocation Effort not long after, with each hosting a Romulan colony that we essentially abandoned to their own devices after the Attack on Mars. The Romulans had a small squadron of 15 ships to protect them, but the intelligence reports suggest only a third of that number remains.
And, if the Saratoga encounters any Romulan ships during this mission, it's surely an act of war. That's a prospect that I don't love because the chances of us finding them are fairly high. If the Audacious is as important as my new XO and Starfleet seem to believe it to be we cannot let the Romulans get their hands on it. If they do it's a disaster for the galaxy.
That is if I can trust my new XO. Losing Commander Sotra has been difficult for me, far more than it should have been. Saratoga's only been in pace for a short period of time, and we had already started to develop a bond. I'm worried if I can do the same with Commander Hall. I don't like spooks and she's as spooky as they come. Being assigned to our mission by the Commodore so quickly, sending my ship on a Red Directive mission, telling me that war is worth it if the Audacious can be recovered... it's a lot. Maybe more than I'm willing to take.
When we find the Audacious, I'm going to blow it out of the stars and deal with the fallout. The Red Directive can be damned for all I care!
