Mission:
Short Treks
Location: Sickbay
While Zhi went to explore his new workspace, Sethan made his way down to sickbay to familiarize himself with his own new workspace. Having never served on a starship before, this was all very new to him. Sure he knew how equipment worked as that was no different than the medical facilities at Starfleet academy. Or even on Vulcan.
He picked up the girls from daycare to have them formally put into the medical system as well. One held by the hand, the other carried on his arm, the Vulcan walked into sickbay. He looked down when Mnheia tugged at his hand to draw his attention.
"This is a scary place," the girl whispered.
"It can be," Sethan admitted as he crouched down to look at her. "But this is a place of healing. When people are sick, this is where they go to get better." He brushed her cheek with the back of his fingers in hope of encouragement. "Come let's go find my new boss. Then you can go back to playing and Saeihr can go back to her nap. Did you help nanny with feeding her?" As he spoke, he glanced around the bay, hoping to spot the Trill woman.
"I have a little thing to try help people who find sickbay scary," Mel said popping up behind them having heard the little girls comment. "Do you like puppies?" she said her eyes bright.
Mnheia turned her head towards her father in question. "What are puppies?" She then asked, never having seen a dog before.
"Computer D'BrooNi programme Spot 1."
The holo projectors Mel had installed in every sickbay she had ever worked in sprang to life and the programmed golden retriever puppy ran up to them wagged its tail.
"I have an engineer friend who made the design. But I have other animal patterns too. Biobed one is kitted out so kids or even nervous adults can feel the programme. Pet whichever animal. There's tons of studies shown how beneficial stroking an animal can be to calm down nervousness," she winked at the Vulcan who she immediatly recognised as one of her new doctors. "Doctor Sethan," she nodded at him.
"Yes ma'am," the Vulcan answered, watching the little girl chase after the dog. He smiled brightly at the Trill woman, "I'm he. I thought I'd bring the girls to be checked as well, kill a few birds? They are adopted, in case you're looking for similarities which aren't there. They've been with us a few months now so we're still finding our way around parenting."
"I'm sure your all doing just fine," Mel said. "Welcome aboard and to my team," she told the Vulcan. "Now then," she said looking at all of them. "Who wants to go first?
"How about the littlest one?" Sethan smiled at his daughter as he placed the baby in his arms onto the bed. Saeihr yawned and opened her eyes briefly as she was removed from the warmth of her blanket. "I have no doubt they're fine so let's see them first then a nurse can take them back to daycare." He watched over the girls like a hawk however, when the chief medical officer examined them.
Mel nodded. "Well then sweetheart your up. Now this is a tricorder. I'm just going to wave it round like a toy. In fact you can have a look at it first if you like," she closed and locked it and handed it to the little one to feel/look at.
"Parent 101, take it from me I have 2 of my own and brought up my little brother. Doesn't matter how young they are, they are little sponges and suck everything in. And they are a lot clever than we give them credit for at the early stages. Also," she winked at him pulling a second one out of another pocket, "Distraction is a tactic you may need to embrace every now and again." Leaving the baby to happily move about the tricorder she had given her, Mel completed a detailed scan.
"She's fine. All systems growing at all the correct rates. Developing as she should be. Weight fine, height fine. She's a tint bit underweight but I wouldn't worry. Its just marginal and kids well they grow out, then up thinning out again," she indicated with her arms, "Repeat, repeat and she's not eating fully just solids yet I am guessing? That's an exiting journey in itself. Oh and remember taste buds change so often."
"We have started her on solids though she still has baby formula at set times. I know very little of Romulan taste buds however..." Sethan smiled sheepishly as he picked up the infant and then with one arm lifted the other girl onto the bed. "Vulcan food tends to be bland but spicy. I'll admit I do prefer Terran food, as long as it is vegetarian."
"Try her on plenty of varied foods. They go through fussy phases. Go for colour and texture. As much variance as possible and as much nutrition as possible," Mel said. "Ok," she blew a whistle and the holodoc stopped and looked over. Then ran in Mels direction. The Trill smiled as she watched the other child follow the pup.
"Your turn," Mel bent down a little towards the other little girl. "Can you come sit on this bio bed for me. The pup can come too," she said picking it up in her arms.
Sethan lifted the older girl onto the bed and watched her getting distracted by the hoko-pup. "She's very quiet," he noted, "we're still in the process of getting her to come out of her shell. She'll help us with her sister and we've been encouraging her to do it. But otherwise we're doing the best we can. She's healthy, and intelligent, more we haven't yet discovered."
The little girl seemed engrossed with the pup, letting the adults do the talking.
"Perhaps check out if there are any children's groups with the other parents. Getting more of a feel for her new surroundings and meeting other children will help wonders with that," she suggested.
"Assuming there are any. I have a feeling that the captain isn't too thrilled about having children on board given the nature of our mission. I do know we have a daycare but we haven't really needed it yet since we only just got here." As the scan finished he lifted the little girl off of the bed and handed her to a nurse to watch before taking her place on the bed.
"Captains are never thrilled in my experience but its the nature of the beast so to speak," Mel commented. Studies had shown that being parted for long periods from family members was debilitating for the majority. "Anything I need to know?" she asked him operating the scanner.
"Not that I'm aware of," Sethan responded as he laid back, "I actually can't recall ever having been sick beyond the children's ailments when I was at that age. I don't suffer Pon Farr either..." He shrugged. "Unless I just never noticed, of course?"
"From what I know medically of Pon farr I think you would notice," Mel said. "Does your mate suffer?" she asked intrigued. She had never come across a Vulcan that had not gone through Pon Farr in all her hosts life times.
"No I don't think he does." Sethan shook his head, seemingly pondering on something. "No, I'm sure he doesn't. I'd know, even if he hasn't made mention of it. We're bonded, I'd know if he does. But we embrace who we are you see, we're not hindered by a desire to control. We don't...need to let it out every once in a while.. if you know what I mean..." Another shake of his head. "We've not been married long, but we saw each other's thoughts and memories. I'm sure I'd know."
"Again from everything I know medically of Pon Farr I think you would," Mel agreed with him.
"If we happen to suffer it, I'm sure we'll let you know. But as we're both well past the age of where men suffer their first time, I honestly doubt we will."
Mel nodded wondering if Pom Farr only affected male female partners. Still to this day the Vulcans stayed so secretive around this condition.
“Well I see nothing on your scans to have concern over,” she said thinking the Vulcans were making her job easy today.
"That's... gratifying," Sethan smiled, holding his arms out to receive his youngest back from the nurse. "And I'm sure having these two to care for will probably help things to stay that way." Meaning to say that having children made him happy which helped with staying healthy. "So we're good to go?"
Mel smiled. "Good to go. I will see you on shift doctor and you two beauties. I do hope I get to see you again. Not in Sickbay though,"
The older girl just his her face against her father's leg. Sethan smiled as he took her hand. "I'll just get these two to day care and then I'll return for my shift," he announced, "I'll be back shortly.
Mel nodded thinking he seemed a nice yet not typical Vulcan who she was sure she could get used too.
